Heart surgery cannot cure a disease completely but it can relieve severe chest pain of the patient and help them live longer. According to medical researchers if any patient undergoes bypass surgery due to serious coronary artery disease the individual is 50% more likely to be alive for the next 5 years compared to patients who receive drug treatment to cure their disease alone. The development of cardiopulmonary, bypass (CPB) for clinical use in 1953 has caused accelerated progress in the field of cardiac surgery. At present cardiac surgery is safe, minimally invasive, and cost-effective due to rapid improvements made to techniques and technologies used in modern-day surgeries.

In spite of such tremendous development in the medical field, only a few patients can access cardiac surgery when it is needed. In developing countries like Pakistan, this discriminative barrier is more obvious among the rich and poor patients.

The disenchanted poor heart patients cannot afford to pay the expensive surgery cost in most Pakistani hospitals which is around Rs. 300,000 to Rs. 500,000 approximately. Pakistan is a developing country where poverty, malnutrition, poor healthcare services, political unrest, illiteracy are a common phenomenon in the country which has crippled many lives.

According to Economic Surgery 2018, about 14.3 percent of the total population is living below the poverty line who can barely afford two times proper and nutritious meals for themselves. Undoubtedly, this poor and unprivileged population cannot afford even the most basic medical checkups, diagnoses or laboratory tests let alone expensive surgeries.

We may feel deep sympathy and pity for these poor patients who are living in a painful state but our sympathy won’t help them to recover from the diseases. We must take effective and practical steps to help poor patients access medical treatments and surgeries for free and ensure a healthy living for them.

Online fundraising Websites for healthcare have proven to be a good resource to help the needy and poor patients arrange the money for their medical bills and surgery costs. Many NGOs and nonprofits have designed and built online fundraising websites to raise thousands of rupees to fund the surgical expenses for the poor.

The charitable organizations ensure that no medical urgency remains unfunded. They are enormously working to reach potential donors all around the world to get the patients funded for their life-saving surgeries. The surgical fundraising websites are powerful ways to connect noble causes with donors who care and the platforms are open for every patient who would come along and ask for help.

How They Started

The founder of The Indus Hospital, Dr. Abdul Bari Khan, and their co-founders served in the public sector hospitals for many years. After a few years, in the year 2005, the Islamic Mission Trust donated a non-functioning hospital building to their founders. This building was renovated and made operational in the year 2007. The Indus Hospital was set up as tertiary care and multi-disciplinary hospital with 150 beds in the area of Korangi. It serves as an absolutely free-of-charge hospital with no cash counter.

5. GoFundMe

GoFundMe is a crowdfunding platform that allows people in some but not all countries to raise money for events ranging from life events such as celebrations and graduations to challenging circumstances like accidents and illnesses. The company is based in San Diego, California.

GoFundMe allows users to create their own website to describe what they are raising money for. During this process, members can describe their fundraising cause, the amount they hope to raise, and upload photos or video. Once the website is created, GoFundMe allows users to share their project with people through integrated social network links (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and email.

People can then donate to a user’s cause through the website using only a debit card or credit card (no PayPal) and track the progress of their funding. Those who donate can also leave comments on the website in support of the project. GoFundMe generates revenue by automatically deducting a 5% fee from each donation users receive. If the user receives no donations, then no charge is made. In addition to the 5% that GoFundMe deducts from each transaction, WePay collects 2.9% and $0.30 from each GoFundMe transaction.

GoFundMe is unique to crowdfunding in that they are not an incentive-based crowdfunding website. Although they do allow projects that are meant to fund other projects for musicians, inventors, etc., the business model is set up to allow for donations to personal causes and life events such as medical bills. GoFundMe also has a special section dedicated solely to users who are trying to raise money to cover their tuition costs. One of the most notable tuition projects involved helping a user raise $25,000 to pay out of state tuition to a PhD program after that user was selected among 125 applicants into that program.

Conclusion

Pakistani population has the highest risk of contracting coronary heart diseases in the world. According to Shifa International Hospital Ltd.,about 33% of Pakistani population above the age of 45 years has hypertension and every year about 30 to 40 percent deaths occur due to cardiovascular diseases in the country.

The increased number of cardiac patients in the country and their deteriorated health conditions has increased the number of patients requiring heart surgeries to prolong their survival for some more years to come. There are some obvious medical costs associated with surgeries that the patients are aware of but there are additional costs as well which are unknown to the patients.

The lists of expenses that contribute to a patients’ surgery bills include:

Physicians’ fees including surgeons and anesthesia providers.

  • Fees for additional staff in the operating roam e.g. nurse and surgical technologists.
  • Fees for operating room including sterilization instruments, anesthesia machinery and other items.
  • Fees for surgical implants which require sterilization procedures, extensive research and testing.
  • Fees for medications, pre surgery testing and care.
  • Fees for recovery room which refers to post anesthesia care unit or PACU.
  • Fees for hospital care forpost surgical recovery, physical and occupational therapy.

The complicated nature and other risk factors involved in a surgery and the way they are tackled by medical professionals sum up to become too expensive and costly for patients. The listed machinery, equipments, professional assistance and hospital facilities are required to conduct a successful surgery for the patient and ensure the individual’s complete recovery.

If hospital authorities cannot find a way to make surgeries cost effective and easily accessible to the poor patients we need to support the underserved people for their treatments and surgeries.

We were born human and now it is in our hands to retain our humanity and serve the people who badly require our financial assistance to live healthy life.. As many nonprofits, NGOs and medical trusts have build surgical fundraising websites to help the cardiac patients get funding for their surgeries, we can accelerate this online giving movement by making a small donation from our monthly or yearly income and encourage our family and friends to do the same.

We do not need to be billionaires to save a life. We just need a generous heart and the urge to save the humanity to get involved in such charitable causes.

Life is a gift. Let’s use this gift as a privilege, opportunity and responsibility to give something back to the poor community and help to uplift lives.Let’s spend our lives on the statement of love and, compassion and where our humanity lies.
