Ali Haider, aged 4 years, a resident of Layyah was suffering from sensorineural hearing loss by birth. His parents didn’t know that at first but when he turned 1 year old, his parents got worried due to his unresponsiveness to their voices. They took him to the hospital where after running some tests the doctors diagnosed him with SNHL. Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL, is categorized by inner ear damage. The inner ear comprises a spiraling organ called the cochlea that contains tiny hair called stereocilia. These hairs convert vibrations from sound waves into neural signals that are carried to the brain via the auditory nerve. It is sadly the most common type of permanent hearing loss. Although medicine or surgery cannot fix this issue properly, but a cochlear implant can help a great deal. A cochlear implant helps the patient to detect the sound and the direction of the sound as well. This progress enables them to acquaint themselves with the surrounding sounds.
Ali Haider awaits Cochlear Implant surgery. A cochlear implant is an expensive surgical procedure that Ali Haider’s father cannot afford with his mere income of PKR. 15,000 and a family of 5 members to feed. He said to us:
“My son has been suffering from this disease since his birth. At first, we thought that he was too small to respond or understand our words, but after 1 year, we noticed that there was something wrong. His siblings call him and he does not respond. His mother says his name and he does not respond. He is getting punished for no reason. Help us put his suffering to an end.”
