Mashooq Ali's Story
Mashooq Ali is a 4 years old little boy who lives in a small jhuggi (a house made from mud) in rural Sindh with his parents and grandparents. Mashooq is the only child of his parents and is loved by everyone. The slum where this family is residing typically lack proper sanitation and clean drinking water. Additionally, there is severe shortage of space inside the houses where the children are living and no public space is dedicated to their use where they can spend their time playing or doing other activities. Children including Mashooq have different kind of childhood in this slum. Instead of playing with toys, they play on rough, dirty and uneven ground which cause them many harmful diseases. Many of the children are performing multiple roles in everyday life and sharing responsibilities with their adults in work. They dont have access to any medical facilities due to which hundreds of people get affected by various diseases every year. Among them, there is this little boy Mashooq who is struggling with his critical health condition.
Mashooq has a cardiac condition called Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) – combination of four related heart defects that commonly occur together. The four defects are: ventricular septal defect (VSD), overriding aorta, pulmonary stenosis and Right ventricular hypertrophy. He often turns blue when he cries and he also feels difficulty in breathing. Mashooq was diagnosed with this disease when he was only 3 months old. His parents got much worried and took him to a local hospital in Sukkur where he got medical treatment for some time. The hospital didn’t have surgical facilities and they recommended Mashooq’s father to take him to a good hospital in city for his heart surgery.
Mashooq’s father is working as a woodcutter and hardly earns around 5,000 rupees a month. In such meager income, this family is struggling hard to make both ends meet. They don’t even have access to basic necessities of life including food and clean water. In such tough situation, it is impossible for them to treat their child from any hospital. Doctor told them that Mashooq has to undergo surgery as soon as possible in order to be able to live a normal life. Without heart surgery, Mashooq is at risk of developing severe, potentially fatal medical complications.
Luckily, this family came to know about Transparent Hands through someone and they immediately brought Mashooq here. This poor child is now scheduled for his major open heart surgery in a few days at Ittefaq Hospital by Dr. Salman Shah. His surgery will not be possible without your kind support.
