Mumtaz Begum's Story

Mumtaz, an elderly woman, has suffered from knee pain for many years. She can’t stand or walk for long.  She is the mother of four children whom she raised well. She worked hard her whole life to provide for her family, even when her knees started to hurt. But she still wanted to take care of her children, no matter what. But the only hurdle to fulfilling her wish to take care of her family is total knee replacement, which her son cannot afford due to limited resources. We request that you give for Mumtaz Begum’s total knee replacement and make her life pain-free.

Mumtaz, a 65-year-old resident of Multan, has been suffering from pain and swelling in the right knee for the last year. Her knee pain and swelling have worsened over time.  Her son took her to a local hospital. After some diagnostic tests and a thorough evaluation, she was diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis (OA) occurs when the cartilage in the knee joint breaks down. Knee pain, stiffness, and swelling are all caused by the bones in the knee rubbing against each other. The doctor advised her to undergo right total knee replacement surgery that entails removing worn or diseased cartilage and bone from the knee and replacing it with a prosthetic.

She lives in a small house with her husband and four children. She is financially dependent on her son. Her son is a daily wager and earns PKR 15,000 per month. His financial condition is not stable enough to pay the surgical expenses. Mumtaz Begum said in despair:

“My inability to move around the house because of knee pain is making it difficult for me to manage daily tasks. Only your generous contributions can ease my suffering.”
