Shehnaz Wisal, a 40-year-old woman from Karachi, had been suffering from pain in her upper abdominal region for the past three years. She faced intolerance to fatty meals and was unable to enjoy meals. She received medical treatment, but didn’t find relief. After suffering for a while, she decided to consult a specialist, who conducted an ultrasound scan and some lab tests and diagnosed her with Cholelithiasis. To treat this issue and prevent potential complications, the doctor advised laparoscopic cholecystectomy. However, the cost of the surgery was overwhelming for her family.

Shehnaz lived in a modest rented home with her husband and four children. Her husband, the sole provider for the family, worked hard as a daily wage laborer and made just PKR 37,000 per month. From this income, they barely covered their house rent, utility bills, as well as other children’s school fees. Due to their financial constraints, paying for Shehnaz’s surgery was impossible for the family, who struggled hard to make ends meet. On February 16, 2025, Shehnaz was admitted to Murshid Hospital in Karachi. On the same day, her surgery was remarkably performed by Dr. Mariam. She received proper post-operative care and was discharged in stable condition from the hospital on February 17, 2025.
