Farzana Bi's Story

Farzana Bibi, a 63-year-old woman from Karachi, has been living with health problems for the past five years. She has been experiencing a lump protruding from the genital tract along with pain and a dragging sensation in her lower abdomen. This illness makes daily activities increasingly uncomfortable for her. Concerned about her condition, she visited a doctor for a detailed evaluation. After a clinical examination, laboratory investigations, and an ultrasound scan, the doctor diagnosed her with Uterovaginal (UV) prolapse. Uterovaginal prolapse occurs when the uterus and surrounding pelvic organs descend from their normal position due to weakened pelvic muscles and supporting tissues. To relieve her symptoms, the doctor has recommended a vaginal hysterectomy. Unfortunately, the cost of the surgery is beyond her family’s financial means. Without the recommended surgery, Farzana’s condition may continue to worsen. Untreated uterovaginal prolapse may lead to increasing pelvic pain, difficulty walking, urinary and bowel problems, recurrent infections, and ulceration of the protruding tissue.

Farzana is divorced. She has four children, all of whom are married and living independently with their own families. She currently lives with her eldest son, who is the sole breadwinner of the household. He works as a Quality Control (QC) Officer in a garments company and earns just PKR 45,000 per month. The family pays PKR 15,000 for monthly rent, PKR 1,500 for utility bills, and PKR 1,000 for her grandson’s school fees. After meeting these essential household expenses, they are left with no means to afford the cost of Farzana’s surgery.

Farzana shared her heartfelt plea as follows:

“I am suffering from pain and discomfort that have made even routine tasks difficult. My son is doing everything he can to look after our family, but his income is only enough to manage our household expenses. Kindly help me receive this surgery so that I can find relief from this condition.”
