While fasting, they abstain from consuming food and drinks from Fajr till Maghrib, while practicing the ideals prescribed by Islam. The Meaning of Dua

Dua is an Arabic word that means ‘invocation’. Dua is how Muslims praise Allah (SWT) and ask for His blessings and help. The main objective of Dua is to call upon Allah (SWT) solely for help and assistance. It is a great way to remember Allah (SWT) and acknowledge His supremacy over all matters. Since Tauheed is the most fundamental and essential part of the Islamic faith, Dua becomes one of the best available expressions for Muslims.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Supplication (du’a’) is itself the worship.”

(He then recited: ) “And your Lord said: Call on Me, I will answer you” (Sunan Abi Dawud, 1479)

Dua allows you, believers, to remember Allah (SWT) regardless of the restrictions of space and time. Therefore, we can conclude that dua isn’t only a form of invocation but also a powerful way of worshiping Allah (SWT). Moreover, Allah (SWT) encourages believers to practise frequently. In the Quran, Allah (SWT) says:

“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.” (Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:186)

Dua for fasting in Ramadan

Ramadan, the most sacred month of the year for believers, offers greater opportunities to act virtuously and gain spiritual rewards. According to a Hadith, supplications made during fasting are accepted by Allah (SWT); therefore, believers are encouraged to make duas while fasting.

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “There are three whose supplication is not rejected: The fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed person; Allah raises it up above the clouds and opens the gates of heaven to it. And the Lord says: ‘By My might, I shall surely aid you, even if it should be after a while.’” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 3598)

It is customary to make supplications before the start of the fast and at its conclusion. While praying and making supplications during fasting is important, we should also start and end fasting with duas. Islam recommends that believers plan and organize, and thus intention is of primary importance. Fasting is an essential duty for Muslims.

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمتُ وَعَلَى رِزقِكَ أَفطَرتُ

Allahumma laka sumtu, wa bika aamantu, wa ‘alayka tawakkaltu, wa Ala rizqika aftartu

Translation: Oh Allah! I fasted for You and I believe in You, and I put my trust in You, and I break my fast with Your sustenance.

Another authentic dua for opening the fast is as follows:

الظَّمَأُ، وَابْتَلَّتِ العُرُوقُ، وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ

Dhahaba adh-dhama’u, wabtallati-l ‘urooq, wa thabatal-ajru in shaa’ Allah

Translation: The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain, God willing.

Duas for The Three Ashras of Ramadan

Ramadan comes with three Ashras. The first Ashra consists of the first ten days, the second Ashra is spread across the next ten days, while the last Ashra follows till the end of the month. All three Ashras have distinct themes, each represented by a different dua or supplication. The recommended supplication for the first Ashra of Ramadan is as follows:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Rabbighfir warham wa anta khayrur-raahimeen.

Translation: “O my Lord, forgive and have mercy, for You are the best of those who show mercy.”

The dua for the second Ashra of Ramdan is as follows:

اَسْتَغْفِرُ اللہَ رَبِّی مِنْ كُلِّ زَنْبٍ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Astagfirullāha rab-bī min kulli dhanbin wa atūbu ilaih

Translation: “I seek forgiveness from Allah my Lord for every sin and I repent to Him.”

The translation for the recommended dua of third and the most important Ashra of Ramadan is as follows:

اللَّهُمَّ أَجِرْنِي مِنَ النَّارِ

Allahumma ajirnī minan nār

Translation: O Allah, save me from the Fire (Hell)

All these supplications have beautiful wording and meanings, and they also offer many spiritual rewards reserved for believers who are willing to remember Allah (SWT) with sincere intention. However, one should also not forget that Islam stresses the need to maintain a balance between Haqooq Allah (the rights of Allah (SWT)) and Haqooq al-Ibad (the rights of the people).

So while worshipping Allah (SWT), don’t forget to express your gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon you.
