How Gift Aid Affects Your Zakat Donation

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and one of the most important obligations on all qualifying Muslims. Zakat becomes obligatory once you reach the Nisab threshold, which is equal to the current market value of 612.36 grams of silver.
British Muslims are known for their generosity. While giving Zakat, many Muslims may wonder about the status of Gift Aid with Zakat. You should declare Gift Aid while giving your Zakat donations. However, the additional amount that your Zakat will generate through Gift Aid should not be deducted from your overall Zakat obligations.
What is Gift Aid and Why Should You Avail It?
Gift Aid UK is a scheme by the government that allows UK-registered charities to claim 25p for every £1 donated. For example, if you make a £100 donation to a charity, they can claim an additional £25. Gift Aid can make a significant difference, allowing charities to receive more financial support to continue their noble work.
To make use of Gift Aid, the donor must be a UK taxpayer and their Income Tax/Capital Gains Tax in the relevant year should cover the amount of the Gift Aid claimed on the donations. If you fit the eligibility criteria, don’t forget to declare Gift Aid because it can potentially increase the value of your donation from the UK. Charities need every bit of support they can get, and by signing up for Gift Aid, you support them as much as possible.
Can You Declare Gift Aid on Zakat donations?
You can declare Gift Aid on your Zakat donations. However, that extra Gift Aid must not be deducted from your total Zakat obligation. For example, if you make a Zakat donation of £1500 to a charity. You can provide an additional £375 benefit to them by opting for Gift Aid. However, you must not deduct £375 from your original Zakat obligations. Your Gift Aid charity donation should be considered a general gift to the charity.
Fundamental Difference Between Zakat and Gift Aid Donation
It is important to have a clear understanding of the difference between Zakat and Gift Aid UK. Remember that Zakat is not an ordinary donation. Besides its obligatory nature, Zakat can only be given to one of the eight categories of people categorically mentioned in the Quran. The purpose of giving Zakat is to purify a believer’s wealth, and it must come from rightfully earned income. Gift Aid is the additional amount that your charity can claim on your Zakat or other donations. It is not a religious obligation. However, you should make use of it to benefit the charity you support.
Why Gift Aid Does Not Reduce Your Zakat Obligation
While different charities and schools of thought may have varying views on Gift Aid charity donations, it is recommended not to treat it as a reduction in Zakat obligation. This is because the amount doesn’t directly come from your eligible wealth. Moreover, it is advisable not to risk missing any portion of your Zakat obligation. Not paying the right amount of Zakat or not paying it on time is a serious transgression in Islam. The following hadith clearly informs the believers about the dangers of not paying Zakat:
“Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Whoever is made wealthy by Allah and does not pay the Zakat of his wealth, then on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will be made like a baldheaded poisonous male snake with two black spots over the eyes. The snake will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks and say, ‘I am your wealth, I am your treasure.’ ” Then the Prophet (ﷺ) recited the holy verses: — ‘Let not those who withhold . . .’ (to the end of the verse). (3.180). (Sahih al-Bukhari, 1403)
Therefore, it is always better to pay the total Zakat amount. Gift Aid on Zakat is a great option, but not to reduce your Zakat obligations.
