How Can U.S. Residents Help Pakistani Flood Victims?

Floods in Pakistan have been causing mass-scale destruction all across the country, affecting over 4 million people. While addressing environmental issues should be a top long-term priority, we should focus on maximizing our relief efforts for the numerous flood-hit families across Pakistan. In this article, we will discuss the current situation, the immediate needs of Pakistani flood survivors, and how you can contribute from the US to help them rebuild their lives.
Current Situation Due to Floods in Pakistan:
According to the latest reports, 946 deaths have been confirmed, out of which 255 were children. Over 1,000 people were injured. 6,508 livestock perished, and 8,238 houses were either destroyed or partially damaged.
According to the United Nations OCHA, 5.8 million Pakistanis have been affected by floods. Around 2.4 million people have been evacuated. A dengue outbreak has been reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and many await treatment for injuries and water-borne diseases.
Reasons for Floods:
Floods in Pakistan are not a new phenomenon. However, floods and other calamities have increased in frequency lately due to drastic climate change. Unfortunately, Pakistan is highly vulnerable to these changes, despite contributing only 0.93% of the global greenhouse gas emissions. To make matters worse, Pakistan ranks 161st on the Human Development Index, which is a very low ranking. This means that Pakistan will require substantial resources to address the impending climate change challenges in the future.
This year the floods were caused by a combination of the following:
Glacier Meltdown:
Due to rising temperatures, Pakistani glaciers are melting at a significantly faster rate than expected, resulting in a substantial increase in water flow. This may deplete freshwater resources and lead to increased flooding in the coming years.
Erratic Monsoon Patterns:
In recent times, monsoons have followed an erratic pattern due to climate change. This has led to heavy rains in rural and urban areas, leading to flooding.
Urban Constructions:
Construction near rivers can contribute to flash floods and cause significant damage. This year, many areas built close to the riverbed and streams have experienced extreme devastation.
All these challenges should be addressed through effective policymaking. However, right now, the focus should be on providing relief to Pakistani flood victims.
How to Help Pakistani Flood Victims?
Pakistani flood victims immediately need attention and assistance. While most flood survivors have been relocated to safer areas, they will still require food, medical care, shelter, and support for rehabilitation.
Among the most immediate needs is first aid and medical care. Waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, hepatitis, dysentery, malaria, and dengue can spread quickly.
These flood victims need your compassionate support at the most difficult time of their lives.
How Is Transparent Hands Helping Flood Victims in Pakistan?
Transparent Hands is an online crowdfunding platform that has provided medical and surgical care to over 260,000 deserving Pakistanis since its inception in 2014. We were among the first charitable organizations to launch a flood relief campaign.
Our Impact
This year, we have already helped over 6,000 flood survivors in Mingora, Buner, Babu Sabu, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sahiwal, Shangla, and Karyal through our free flood relief camps and food distribution program.
We have provided them with free first aid, checkups by female and male doctors, diagnostics like malaria tests, medicines, clothes, and food packages. Each food package we distribute consists of the following items: Chickpeas, Red Lentils, Wheat Flour, White Sugar, Oil, Rice, Tea, Red Chili Powder, Iodized Table Salt, Tea Whitener, and Soap.
Besides providing medical services, we also arranged preventive healthcare sessions so that the flood survivors could prevent the spread of diseases.
Our Current Target
With your support, Transparent Hands will support at least 100,000 Pakistani flood victims from 1000 villages across the country. Your compassionate donations will enable us to reach out to an increasing number of flood-hit families. Besides first aid, medical care, clothes, and flood packs, we will also distribute tents and mosquito nets in specific areas.
