The concept of food banking was developed by John van Hengel in Phoenix, AZ in late 1960. Van Hengel, a retired businessman, had been volunteering at a soup kitchen trying to find food to serve the hungry. One day, he met a desperate mother who regularly rummaged through grocery store garbage bins to find food for her children.

She suggested that there should be a place where, instead of being thrown out, discarded food could be stored for people to pick up—similar to the way “banks” store money for future use. With that, an industry was born.

Van Hengel established St. Mary’s Food Bank in Phoenix, AZ as the nation’s first food bank. In its initial year, van Hengel and his team of volunteers distributed 275,000 pounds of food to people in need. Word of the food bank’s success quickly spread, and states began to take note. By 1977, food banks had been established in 18 cities across the country.

As the number of food banks began to increase, van Hengel created a national organization for food banks and in 1979 he established Second Harvest, which was later called America’s Second Harvest the Nation’s Food Bank Network. In 2008, the network changed its name to Feeding America to better reflect the mission of the organization.

Today, Feeding America is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization—a powerful and efficient network of 200 food banks across the country. As food insecurity rates hold steady at the highest levels ever, the Feeding America network of food banks has risen to meet the need. Conclusion

Data from US Census Bureau’s American community survey showed the total number of families living in low income stands at 47.5 million including  23.5 million children. The low-income working families are those earning less than twice the federal poverty line and this low-income threshold for a family of four with two children was $ 45,622.

Low-income families are going without beds cookers, meal, new clothes, and their endless struggles to pay domestic bills, rents etc. The impact of low income has caused relationships to break down in families. According to data provided by the Global Issue, of the world’s 2.3 billion children 320 million children are living with single parents and the majority is headed by single mothers. List of Top 15 Trust Organizations in USA for Christmas Donations for low income Families.

A few single mothers reported by  The Guardian that they had turned to prostitution to make ends meet! Nothing can be more awful than this; a woman forced to compromise with her dignity to meet ends. Just think about the intensity of her crisis that could have compelled her to do this.

Children living with single mothers or in low-income families are at a critical age. Their brains are still developing so when they cannot get necessities like healthcare, quality food, education or the environment they need effects  and heavily damage their physical and mental health.

The low-income families or people are not numbers; they are humans and possess life! It’s easy to dismiss everything and blame the government when their miseries are presented before us as statistics,  facts, and percentages.

When we come forward, share their story and give a donation regardless the amount, it means something.  A  generous heart is a  giving heart. A generous heart is a wide open heart that thinks of others first.  This Christmas eve when we’ll be celebrating regardless our respective religions, let’s give others a  reason to smile, a word of cheer, and a  bit of donation.

Your Christmas Donations can now save hundreds of lives!
