Ashvin Kumar's Story

Ashvin Kumar, a one-year-old boy from Karachi, can’t hear. His parents became concerned when they observed that he did not respond to voices or sounds like other children of his age. Concerned, they consulted a nearby doctor, who recommended several medical tests. After reviewing the results, the doctor diagnosed Ashvin with congenital hearing loss and advised a hearing aid to help him hear and support his speech and language development. Although a hearing aid can open the door to the world of sounds, its cost is beyond the family’s financial capacity. Without the recommended hearing aid, Ashvin may continue to face delays in speech and language development, difficulty communicating with others, and limitations in his social and emotional growth. This hearing aid is essential to help him reach important developmental milestones and improve his quality of life.

Ashvin lives with his parents, two siblings, and extended family in a rented home in Karachi. His father is the sole earning member of the family and holds a private job, earning PKR 70,000 per month. A significant portion of this income is spent on the family’s monthly house rent of PKR 50,000, while additional expenses, including PKR 7,000 for one child’s education and other household necessities, leave little room for savings. Despite working hard to provide for his family, Ashvin’s father is unable to afford his son’s hearing aid.

Ashvin’s father shared:
