Significance of Rabi Ul Awal

Rabi Ul Awal is the third month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the most significant months in the Islamic year. The 12th of Rabi Ul Awal is celebrated as the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by many Muslims. It is a much-anticipated time of the year as many Muslims prepare to celebrate the 12th of Rabi Ul Awal with traditional and religious zeal. Many cultural and religious activities are arranged during the month of Rabi Ul Awal to pay tribute to the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). In this article, we will discuss the significance of Rabi Ul Awal, its commencement in Pakistan, and how it should be observed.
What Does Rabi Ul Awal Mean?
This month is derived from two words: ‘Rabi’ and ‘Awal’. Rabi means spring in Arabic, while “Awal” means first. Hence, Rabi Ul Awal means “the first spring”. In the pre-Islamic era, the month might be related to the beginning of the spring season; however, Islam proposed a lunar calendar, and hence, Rabi Ul Awal is observed accordingly.

Why is Milad Ul Nabi Important to Muslims?
Milad, or Milad Ul Nabi, refers to the birth of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ). The birth of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) is one of the most significant historical events that occurred during Rabi Ul Awal. Many scholars agree that He was born on the 12th of Rabi Ul Awal, while some believe that He was born either on the 8th or the 9th of Rabi Ul Awal. Despite slight disagreement on the exact date of His birth, scholars agree that He was born on a Monday, during Rabi Ul Awal. We get a clue about it in the following Hadith:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked about fasting on Mondays. He said, “That is the day on which I was born and the day on which I received Revelation.” (Riyad as-Salihin, 1255)
When is Milad Expected in Pakistan?
In Pakistan, this month is expected to start on Saturday, 24 August 2025. However, it is subject to the sighting of the moon. This means that Milad Ul Nabi is expected to be either on Thursday, September 04, 2025, or Friday, September 05, 2025.
How is Milad celebrated in Pakistan?
In Pakistan, the 12th of Rabi Ul Awal is a public holiday. It is traditionally celebrated with religious zeal. Important national monuments, offices, homes, and streets are illuminated with decorative lights. Milad conferences and Na’at competitions are held all around the country to commemorate the achievements of the Prophet (ﷺ). In major cities, processions are also organized, and Islamic scholars are invited to speak about the life and teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ).
Cooking and distributing meals is a common tradition in many Muslim countries, including Pakistan. Throughout Rabi Ul Awal, Pakistanis cook and share food to commemorate the event.
Milad-un-Nabi is undoubtedly celebrated as a significant festival in Pakistan. While many believers enjoy the festival with their friends and families, the real spirit of the event lies in adhering to the values and principles taught by the Prophet (ﷺ). That is why it is important to adopt the Sunnahs of the Prophet (ﷺ).
What Should We Do During Rabi Ul Awal?
