Where to Pay Zakat

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and one of the most important obligations on believers who are eligible for it. The Quran and the hadith urge believers to be charitable and play their role in making the world a more equitable place. While the Quran has specifically mentioned the groups of people who can receive Zakat, the purpose of the practice is to prevent economic stagnation, allowing wealth to change hands and thus creating greater opportunities for the poor. According to the UN, the potential size of the annual Zakat pool is between US$200 billion and US$1 trillion. While many Muslims pay their annual obligation of Zakat, the question of where to pay Zakat remains relevant.

In this article, we will discuss the importance of paying Zakat and why you should donate your Zakat to an organization like Transparent Hands.

Zakat’s Importance in Islam:

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and an important practice that enables believers to demonstrate their faith in Allah (SWT). Zakat is eligible for all sane, adult Muslims who possess wealth equal to or greater than the Nisab value. The Nisab value is traditionally defined as equivalent to 612.36 grams of silver.

The State Bank of Pakistan has determined the Nisab value for 2025 to be Rs 179,689. Therefore, any adult and sane Muslim possessing wealth equal to or more than that amount must pay 2.5% of their wealth to those who qualify to receive Zakat.

While Zakat is an annual obligation, many Muslims choose to give Zakat during Ramadan. Remember that your Zakat obligation begins exactly one year after your first Zakat payment is made. Since the Islamic year is lunar, the exact time of Zakat should be calculated accordingly.

It is not recommended to delay Zakat, waiting for Ramadan’s arrival. However, paying Zakat in advance is allowed. The provision can be used to adjust your Zakat paying cycle to Ramadan, and the decision on where to pay Zakat should be made in time.

Is Paying Zakat Obligatory?

Paying Zakat annually is obligatory on all Muslims who possess wealth equal to the Nisab.

The Quran urges Muslims to be charitable because it allows a person to detach from worldly possessions for the sake of Allah (SWT). The Quran says:

“Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah ] from that which you love. And whatever you spend – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it. (Surat ‘Āli `Imrān, 3:92)

Zakat’s importance can be determined by the fact that it is often declared as the third pillar of Islam. The following Hadith further helps us understand the status of Zakat:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Islam is based on (the following) five (principles):

  1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ).
  2. To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers dutifully and perfectly.
  3. To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity) .
  4. To perform Hajj. (i.e. Pilgrimage to Mecca)
  5. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 8)

Therefore, paying Zakat on time is a prime duty that must be performed annually, according to the principles defined by Shariah.
