Baraani Bibi's Story

Baraani Bibi, a 59-year-old woman from Hyderabad, has been living in a world clouded by blurred vision and discomfort for the past three years. With time, it turned into a serious visual impairment, making it increasingly difficult for her to perform even the simple daily tasks. Her deteriorating eyesight has not only affected her independence but also her ability to contribute to her household. After consulting a doctor at a local hospital, Baraani Bibi underwent some medical tests and was diagnosed with a cataract in her left eye. The doctor has advised her to undergo left-sided Phacoemulsification with Intraocular Lens (Phaco + IOL) to restore her sight. However, the cost of the surgery is beyond her family’s means.

If left untreated, the condition will worsen. It may eventually lead to complete blindness in the affected eye, increasing her dependence on others.

Baraani Bibi lives in a temporary shelter with her large joint family of 14 members. Her three sons work as daily wage laborers. Together, they earn around PKR 40,000 per month. Her husband is unwell and unable to work. The family’s limited income is consumed by daily living expenses, utilities, and the needs of a large household. Despite their best efforts, they simply cannot afford the cost of Baraani Bibi’s cataract surgery. During this moment of despair, Baraani Bibi and her family reached out to Transparent Hands and asked for help.

She said with teary eyes:
