Shagufta Khatoon's Story

Every mother dreams of holding her newborn in her arms without worries and fears. However, for Shagufta Khatoon, a 35-year-old woman from Karachi, this dream is shadowed by her financial limitations. She is currently 26+ weeks pregnant and has previously delivered three children. Her current pregnancy has become high-risk due to placenta previa, a condition where the placenta partially or completely covers the cervix, making natural delivery dangerous. Her gynecologist has advised her to undergo a C-section to prevent life-threatening complications for both the mother and baby.

If Shagufta does not undergo the recommended C-section, the consequences will be severe. Placenta previa may lead to excessive bleeding during labor, fetal distress and cause life-threatening risks to both the mother and child.

Her husband works as a lab technician, earning a monthly income of just PKR 40,000. From this limited amount, PKR 20,000 goes towards their house rent. They also pay PKR 3,000 for school fees for their three children and PKR 4,500 for utility bills. Adding to their financial responsibility, Shagufta’s sister-in-law also lives with them. With these expenses, it is impossible for them to afford the cost of the much-needed surgical procedure.
