Islam is not only a religion but a complete way of life which acts as the guidance for believers. It encourages them to walk on the path of peace, mercy, and forgiveness. Amongst the five pillars of Islam that frames the Muslim life concern for the needy or Zakat is extremely important. Lets know about the concept, purpose, and importance of Zakat in Islam.
According to Islamic principles, everything belong to Allah (S.W.T) and that wealth is held by human beings in trust. The word Zakat means ‘purification’ and ‘growth’. Zakat spiritually purifies a believer’s wealth; however, it must be understood that Islam firmly encourages Halal earnings and unlawful or Halal means of earnings are strictly prohibited in Islam, and giving Zakat on such earnings will not purify them. For most purposes, this involves the payment each year of two and a half percent of one’s capital.
Once you are eligible to pay Zakat, it becomes an annual obligation. Since Islam recommends following a lunar calendar, ensure that you calculate your Zakat exactly after a lunar year. Many Muslims prefer to give Zakat during Ramadan. However, delaying Zakat isn’t recommended. If you prefer to give Zakat during Ramadan, you will need to adjust your Zakat giving annual cycle by paying advance Zakat for the upcoming year. According to a Hadith, paying advance Zakat is permissible.
“Al‑ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbdal‑Muttalib asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about paying the ṣadaqah (his zakāh) in advance before it became due, and he gave permission to do that.” — Book 9, Hadith 1624.
The Purpose of Zakat in Islam
The Holy Quran emphasizes the importance of offering prayers and paying zakat many times. The fundamental objective of paying Zakat is to obey Allah’s (S.W.T). Zakat is an excellent way to distance oneself from the obsession with accumulating wealth and power. Another objective of paying Zakat is to create balance in society and assist those in need.
Zakat maintains economic balance in society, ensuring that wealth circulates from the rich to the poor and does not stay stagnant. On an individual level, Zakat purifies and helps us achieve spiritual purity in our daily routine matters. Wealth is usually earned individually by hard work and intense dedication. So, when we give or share even a small portion of this, it reflects our firm faith in Allah (S.W.T).
The Importance of Zakat in Islam
Poverty is a real issue that undermines human potential. According to the WHO, approximately half of the world’s population lacks access to basic healthcare, while over 700 million people around the world live in extreme poverty. These are real hurdles in human progress. Zakat addresses these issues by enabling believers to support others while pleasing Allah (SWT).
The vital importance of Zakat is reflected as the law of Allah: “My mercy encompasses all things, but I will specify it for the righteous who give Zakat.” (The Quran: verses:7:156).
Give Zakat to Purify Hard-earned Wealth
If one does not know any needy person, he or she may give the Zakat to a mosque or charitable organization with the distinct purpose of helping the poor and sick. Charities given to mosques or hospitals or organizations can be considered obligatory as Sadaqa. Again in the Quran in ( verses:3:92), it is mentioned “You cannot attain righteousness until you give to charity from the possessions you love. Whatever you give to charity, the Almighty is fully aware thereof.”
When giving charity, we must be humble and refrain from acting as if we are doing a favor, as pride can diminish the value of good deeds in Islam. We should be careful and make sure we give to the recipient with the utmost respect. We cannot boast that we gave to the charity. The Quran warns against this attitude.
“O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.”— Qur’an 2:267
While giving charity, we should be selfless, straightforward, and eliminate our ego. Our life on earth is only decided by Allah, and death can come at any moment, and we cannot ask for more time. Hence, every opportunity should be used to do righteous deeds, and we should give to charity from the abundance that Allah has granted us.
