Soni Kalhooro, a 55-year-old woman from Matiari, Sindh, has been experiencing upper right abdominal pain for the past two years. Every meal is followed by nausea and vomiting, and she also experiences intolerance to fatty foods. Soni has become weak, and her condition occasionally confines her to bed. Recently, she visited a doctor at a local hospital, who performed an ultrasound scan and some lab tests and diagnosed Soni with Gallstones. These are hard mineral deposits that form in the gallbladder. To ease her pain and prevent further complications, her doctor has advised open cholecystectomy. Unfortunately, the cost of the surgery is out of her family’s financial capacity.

Due to poor dietary intake, Soni’s condition will worsen over time. Continued intake of painkillers will disturb her stomach. It may lead to complications like gallbladder infections, bile duct obstruction, and even organ damage.

Soni’s family is facing financial hardships. After her husband’s death a few years ago, she and her daughter have been entirely dependent on their relatives. They don’t even have their own home and currently live at their relatives’ house. Soni receives PKR 5,000 monthly through the Benazir Income Support Program, along with an additional PKR 5,000 provided by her relatives as assistance.
