Aziza Bibi's Story

Thirty-seven years old Azizan Bibi has been suffering from severe pain in her lumbar area for the last two years. Along with pain, she suffered from nausea and vomiting as well. At first, she ignored it deeming a small intestinal upset. But, later, the pain increased to a point of no return. After bearing a lot of pain, Azizan Bibi consulted a physician. After a thorough investigation, the doctor diagnosed Azizan Bibi with renal stones in her left kidney. Renal stones are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys.

The local doctors prescribed her several medicines, but none of them provided any long term relief. Now, to treat this condition, the doctor has advised Azizan to undergo a PCNL. PCNL stands for percutaneous nephrolithotomy, a minimally invasive procedure that facilitates the removal of kidney stones. The surgical intervention involves the infliction of a small puncture wound. While there is no doubt on the effectiveness of the procedure, it is a major surgery that can cost a patient a lot financially.

Unfortunately, Azizan Bibi does not have the means to arrange for his PCNL surgery. Azizan Bibi is financially dependent on her brother. He works as a laborer and hardly earns PKR 9000 per month. Azizan Bibi tells us:

“After my father passed away, my brother took care of me. He is partially blind and earns his living by doing manual labor. How can I ask him to arrange for my surgery.”
