Balqees Bibi's Story

Balqees Bibi, aged 65, hails from the Pakpattan district of the country and suffers from right breast cancer. In this disorder, abnormal cells are found in a large number in breast tissues. These cancerous cells form a tumor, which can be visualized using a mammogram study. The tumorous mass can also be felt physically since it forms a lump. If not treated in time, breast cancer can spread to other body parts as well, if the cancerous cells find a way into the blood or lymphatic system. Fortunately, there does exist a treatment for this disease which can make Balqees Bibi’s life comfortable. A modified radical mastectomy.

A mastectomy is an effective surgical treatment for breast cancers. It is performed to remove breast tissues so that the spread of cancer can be controlled. Speaking more specifically about radical mastectomy, removal of tissues underlying the chest muscles and lymph nodes of the axilla is the main goal in this surgical treatment. While there is no doubt on the effectiveness of the treatment, it is quite an expensive surgical procedure. Balqees Bibi’s current financial situation doesn’t allow her to afford it, which is why she has not undergone it, yet. She says:

“Eleven months. That’s how long I have been suffering from cancer. There hasn’t been a day in these eleven months, which was void of intolerable pain. Chemotherapy weakened me further if that sounds possible to you. But at least it did what it was supposed to do i.e. prepare me for my mastectomy. But now that I am one surgery away from almost normal life, I have run out of whatever funds I had for my cancer treatment. As a widow who is dependent on her sons’ income, which is hardly 15,000 PKR per month, I couldn’t be more uncertain about my surgery”

Transparent Hands understands the Balqees Bibi’s dilemma. We are going to do everything we can to ensure that Balqees Bibi gets her surgery. But we need your help as well. And the best way you can help Balqees Bibi is by donating for her right radical mastectomy NOW!
