For the past two years, Begum Jan has been feeling pain during urination. When the problem persisted for weeks, Begum Jan consulted a doctor who prescribed her some medicines for temporary relief. Moreover, the doctor told her that Begum Jan has been suffering from Urethritis. It is an inflammation of the urethra. Pain with urination is the main symptom of Urethritis. In most long standing cases it is accompanied by Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO). It occurs when there is a blockage at the base of bladder neck. Such a blockage reduces or stops the flow of urine into the urethra.

To move towards the treatment, the doctor has advised Begum Jan to undergo a Cystoscopy. Cystoscopy is the endoscopy of the urinary bladder via the urethra. It is carried out with a cystoscope to diagnose the ailment. 

Unfortunately, Begum Jan’s family cannot afford the hefty cost of a Cystoscopy. Begum Jan’s husband passed away a while ago. Therefore, she is financially dependent on her son, who hardly manages to earn PKR 30,000 per month. With a family of six to raise in this income, he cannot save for his mother’s surgery. He told us:
