When Farzana was three years old, she accidentally burnt her hands in a house fire and sustained third degree burns. After the wounds healed, Farzana developed contractures on her right hand. Contractures are a permanent tightening of the muscles, tendons, skin, and nearby tissues that causes the joints to shorten and become very stiff.

Therefore, the doctor advised her to undergo a contracture release procedure. It is a procedure that is performed by lengthening the tendon in question, thereby correcting the deformity.

Unfortunately, while a contracture release procedure promises a pain-free future to Farzana Bibi, it is not an affordable procedure for her family. Farzana Bibi’s parents cannot afford the hefty cost of a contracture release procedure. Her father is the sole earner of the family. He works as a manual laborer and hardly earns PKR 20,000 per month. With this income, he barely manages to cover the utilities and basic household expenses. Therefore, he is in no position to arrange for Farzana’s contracture release procedure. He told us:

Farzana Bibi's Story

Farzana Bibi, a 13-years-old resident of Vehari, got her right hand burnt in a fire. She was taken to the emergency room for first aid management and advised to do dressings at home. Unfortunately, due to a lack of adequate care, her condition worsened. Her parents took her to the doctor again and she was diagnosed with post-burn contracture of the right hand. The doctor advised her to undergo contracture release surgery. For this purpose, Farzana was admitted to Lahore Care Hospital and the surgery was performed by Dr. Imran on 12.01.2022. She stayed in the hospital for two days and was discharged in a stable condition.
