For the last five years, Kalsoom has been suffering from Hyperthyroidism, also called overactive thyroid. It is a condition where the thyroid releases high levels of thyroid hormone into the body. This condition can make your metabolism speed up. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include a rapid heartbeat, weight loss, increased appetite and anxiety.

Therefore, to save her from the threat of cancer, the doctor has advised her to get a Subtotal Thyroidectomy. Subtotal Thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure in which the majority of the thyroid gland is removed. However, the surgeon leaves some part of the thyroid tissue to achieve a normal thyroid function. After her doctor’s advice, Kalsoom and her husband have circled back and forth to various local hospitals in search of a free treatment but all their efforts have gone in vain.

Kalsoom cannot afford the hefty cost of her surgery at any private hospital. Her son is the sole earner of the family. He works as a manual labourer with a construction company and hardly earns enough to feed his family. Therefore, he is in no position to arrange for Kalsoom’s surgery. She told us:

Kalsoom Wadood's Story

Kalsoom, aged 52 years, a resident of Gujrat suffered from a neck lump and dyspnea for the last 5 year. She went to the doctor and got her symptomatic treatment after being diagnosed as a goiter. Despite that, her condition did not improve. Then she went to a specialist and after a thorough evaluation, Kalsoom was advised by her doctor to undergo a right Hemithyroidectomy. For this purpose, she was admitted to City Hospital Gujrat and the surgery was performed by Dr. Khawar Iqbal on 3.10.2021. She stayed in the hospital for two days and was discharged in a stable condition. Kalsoom’s recovery is steady since she is taking bed rest as advised by her surgeon.
