Masahiba Ishfaq, 35 years old, had been suffering from severe pain in her left hip joint for seven years. She resorted to herbal and homeopathic medicines initially. However, none of those options pertaining to alternative medicine worked. Then she consulted doctors in a local hospital. Her condition went undiagnosed for some time until she got an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. Multiple tests were performed for the assessment of her hip joint and her condition was diagnosed as avascular necrosis (AVN). It refers to the death of bone tissue that is caused as a result of loss of blood supply. The orthopedic surgeon advised total hip replacement surgery as the only cure for her chronic pain. It is a surgery to replace a worn-out hip joint with an artificial joint (prosthesis).
Now, the problem is that the severity of pain in Masahiba’s left hip joint is increasing day by day. She desperately wants to get operated but her husband cannot afford the treatment procedure in his monthly income. He is a daily wager and earns only PKR 20,000 per month. This amount is not sufficient even for their current expenses. Affording an expensive surgical procedure, that too on an urgent basis, is completely out of question at this point in their life.

Masahiba Ishfaq, aged 35 years, suffered from pain in her left hip joint for seven years. As a result the range of movement of her left leg also became limited. On a thorough medical check-up, she was diagnosed with avascular necrosis, which meant that the loss of blood supply had caused death of bone tissue in her left hip joint. The doctor advised total hip replacement as the definitive treatment. For this purpose, Masahiba was admitted to PSRD Orthopaedic Hospital and the surgery was performed by Dr. Javed Iqbal on 20.04.2021. She stayed in the hospital for four days and was discharged in a satisfactory condition. Masahiba can move around painlessly now.
