Muhammad Imad's Story

Muhammad Imad is an 11 years old boy who hails from the Mardan district of the country and suffers from a condition called Hydrocele. A year has elapsed since Imad first experienced the nauseating pain because of this condition. For those of you who are not aware of this disorder, a hydrocele refers to a swelling in the scrotum. Normally this happens, when fluid accumulates in the sheath surrounding the man’s testicle. It is a disorder that normally gets sorted on its own by the age of one year, but unfortunately, that has not been the case with Imad. In fact, the little boy’s condition has reached a point where he has to undergo a PPV ligation. 

PPV or patent processus vaginalis ligation is a surgical procedure that allows the surgeon to drain the fluid accumulated in a hydrocele. This usually involves tying the PPV (hydrocele) in the groin. An incision is made in the groin for closing a channel between the cavity and scrotum. The finer details of the surgical procedure can wait for now, but there is no denying the fact that it is an extremely effective surgical procedure. However, it can cost the patient undergoing it quite a fair bit of money, which is exactly the dilemma Muhammad Imad and his family are facing now. His father says:

“I am a daily wager, all that I earn every month is 10,000 PKR per month, sometimes even less than that. So, try to understand my pain as I watch my boy writhe in pain every day when I come back home from work. I know what will cure him, but I cannot afford it. Ain’t that just a tragedy?”
