Doesn’t it break one’s heart when we see the little ones suffering? Nabeela Fatima’s story is quite heart-breaking, actually. This 4 years old from the Okara district suffers from a female genital disorder called RVF. RVF refers to rectovestibular fistula, a congenital disorder in which an abnormal connection is made between the rectum and the vulval vestibule. This is a congenital disorder of the female genitalia, which can be corrected by an anterior sagittal anorectoplasty. It is also the treatment that Nabeela Fatima has been recommended as well. 

To treat this ailment, the first step of the process, a colostomy surgery was done at a local hospital 2 years ago. The next step of the process, an ASARP is quite a simple surgical procedure that can correct most anorectal malformations. Of course, there are a few risks, but the process ensures that complications don’t arise during the surgery, which is the case with other treatment options available for RVF. However, it is quite costly as well, and things are not great financially as far as Nabeela’s family is concerned. Her father says:

“I thought my poor child’s days of misery were over when she had surgery for RVF a couple of years ago. But now, we again find ourselves in a position where Nabeela is suffering every day and there is nothing that we can do about it, simply because we don’t have enough resources to manage the surgery. I pray no father has to go through what I am going through right now”

Nabeela’s father earns a mere 12,000 PKR per month by labouring all month. To expect that he will be able to manage an ASARP in this limited income is nothing more than wishful thinking.
