Nabeela Kausar's Story

Nabeela Kausar, a 25-year-old female who hails from Lahore, is a patient of Tetralogy of Fallot, or TOF in short. This is a congenital cardiac defect. It was eleven years after her birth when Nabeela’s father became aware of this disease. Nabeela’s life, so far, has been nothing but a saddening tale of misery. Ever since her echocardiogram (ECHO test) revealed that Nabeela suffers from TOF, life has not been the same for Nabeela and her family. Tetralogy of Fallot refers to a combination of four different defects of the heart. These four defects include ventricular septal defect, pulmonary stenosis, overriding of the aorta and right ventricular hypertrophy.

Some of the common symptoms of TOF include bluish skin colour (cyanosis), shortness of breath and loss of weight. Nabeela has been experiencing all these symptoms since her birth, which is why her doctors have recommended her a TOF repair surgery. This is an open-heart surgery in which all four defects of the TOF are repaired, a process that greatly improves the quality of life of the patient undergoing the surgery. But, for Nabeela, this is a luxury that she cannot afford, at least at this point in her life. You see, Nabeela’s father is a daily wager. All that he earns from labouring hard all month is 12,000 PKR. Even the 6,000 PKR her sister earns do not do much good to the family’s financial status. A surgical procedure like TOF repair will cost a lot, something that Nabeela’s family is not prepared for.

Nabeela Kausar's Story

Nabeela Kausar, 25 years old, suffered from breathing difficulty since her birth. As she grew up, and got medical consultation, she was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). The doctors advised a TOF repair surgery. For this purpose, she was admitted in Ittefaq Hospital and the procedure was performed by Dr. Salman Ahmed Shah on 04.12.2020. Her open heart surgery and total correction of the defect was done. Nabeela stayed in the hospital for eight days and was discharged in a stable condition. She is slowly recovering from her major surgery.
