Six months ago, three years old Sawera Mustafa had a sudden episode of severe abdominal pain. Her parents immediately took her to the local hospital where she underwent a colostomy for fecal peritonitis. Fecal peritonitis is a condition wherein the peritoneum becomes infected by fecal matter in the peritoneal cavity, caused by large intestinal perforation due to some disease. .

Now, Sawera Mustafa needs colostomy reversal surgery. A colostomy closure surgery is an integral step in Sawera’s journey towards recovery. However, it is not an affordable surgery. Unfortunately, Sawera’s parents cannot afford the hefty cost of a colostomy reversal surgery. She had her previous surgery at a public hospital. Now, because of COVID closures, they could get a date at any public hospital. Unfortunately, Sawera’s parents cannot afford the hefty cost of surgery. Sawera’s father works at a crockery factory and hardly manages to earn PKR 24000 per month. With this income, it is really difficult for him to arrange for his daughter’s surgery at a private hospital. He told us:

Four-year-old Sawera Mustafa, a resident of Gujrat, had her colostomy done for fecal peritonitis when she was presented with sudden onset of abdominal pain at the age of six months. Her surgery was done at Children Hospital. Recently, she was advised to undergo duhamel pull through procedure. Therefore, she was sent to Ittefaq Hospital for her surgery. Her procedure was performed by Dr. Daud on 21-04-2022. Sawera was kept under observation until she was seen progressing well. She was discharged after six days of hospital stay.
