Shamim Akhtar, aged 50, hails from Multan and suffers from cataract in her right eye. The bit of information that you read at the end of this sentence has made a tough life even tougher for Shamim. Cataract hasn’t made only her vision cloudy but her chances of supporting a family of six as well. You see, Shamim is a daily wager. All that she manages to earn every day is 250 PKR, at most. Phacoemulsification is a surgical procedure that is performed to remove the faulty lens. The usual practice is to insert the probe via a small incision so that the cloudy lens can be broken into tiny little pieces. Fragments are removed (sucked out) and an intraocular lens (IOL) is placed. All it takes is one hour at most to treat cataracts via a phacoemulsification-IOL surgery. However, apart from being an effective procedure, it is also an expensive one. A procedure that Shamim or her family cannot afford on their own.
