Shamim Akhtar's Story
Shamim Akhtar, aged 50, hails from Multan and suffers from cataract in her right eye. The bit of information that you read at the end of this sentence has made a tough life even tougher for Shamim. Cataract hasn’t made only her vision cloudy but her chances of supporting a family of six as well. You see, Shamim is a daily wager. All that she manages to earn every day is 250 PKR, at most. And in this limited income, she has to pay 3000 PKR in house rent as well. We are sure that you can understand why the news of Shamim suffering from a cataract came as a huge shock for the family. It is not as if all hope is lost for Shamim though. A Phacoemulsification and IOL (Intra Ocular Lens) surgery of the right eye can put an end to her misery!
Phacoemulsification is a surgical procedure that is performed to remove the faulty lens. The usual practice is to insert the probe via a small incision so that the cloudy lens can be broken into tiny little pieces. Fragments are removed (sucked out) and an intraocular lens (IOL) is placed. All it takes is one hour at most to treat cataracts via a phacoemulsification-IOL surgery. However, apart from being an effective procedure, it is also an expensive one. A procedure that Shamim or her family cannot afford on their own.
“Last one year has been the toughest year of my life. The pain that never seems to leave me, the declining sense of vision, and the replacement of hope with fear. And if it wasn’t for one last flame of hope that is still flickering in my life, I would have given up already. That hope is you, the reader of my tale of misery.”- Shamim Akhtar

Shamim Akhtar's Story
Shamim Akhtar, 50 years old, was diagnosed with bilateral cataract and was advised a phacoemulsification surgery along with an intraocular lens implant for the right eye since it was more affected. For this purpose, she was admitted in Bakhtawar Amin Memorial hospital and the procedure was performed by Dr. Asif Manzoor on 19.11.2020. Shamim did not have to stay in the hospital as she was discharged the same day after the procedure in a stable condition. Her vision has cleared after the surgery.
“My vision was blurry. It was very inconvenient and affected my work. The surgery has benefited me a great deal. My vision in the right eye is clear now.”- Shamim Akhtar
