Muhammad Sultan's Story

Muhammad Sultan, aged 6 years, suffered from an unusual condition since he was born. His mother noticed that his stream of urine was not normal. Initially, she decided to ignore and do nothing about her observation. However later, as Sultan grew up, his condition remained the same. Concerned, his mother took him to a local doctor who referred Sultan to a urologist. On detailed evaluation, his condition was diagnosed as penoscrotal hypospadias. In the people affected with this condition, the urethral opening is located on the undersurface of male genitalia. Sultan was advised Staged Urethroplasty – BRACKA I surgery for reconstruction of the new urethra.

Sultan’s mother was very alarmed and worried to find out that her son required a surgical procedure. This is because his father works in a shoe shop and earns only PKR 12,000 per month. In this meagre amount, he has to support his parents as well as his wife and four children. The financial condition of their family is not stable. A surgery costs a hefty amount which they would not be able to manage in their inadequate budget.

“My son needs a corrective surgery. I wish I could have him treated in the best possible hospital. I feel a profound sense of guilt for not being able to afford my child’s treatment. The nights have become longer and sleep has evaded me. Maybe, constant praying can bring us out of this difficult situation”– said Sultan’s father.
