Mai Khatoon's Story

“‘What happened to our mama?’ ‘Why she cries all day?’ These are just a few of many questions which my kids ask me every day. How could I tell them that their mother is on the verge of death? How could I explain to them that their mother is fighting from the deadly disease ‘cancer’? They are too young to understand the constant pain she is going through. I’m ashamed to face my kids and wife knowing that I’m unable to afford her life-saving treatment. I’ll not forgive myself ever if something happens to her” – Mai Khatoon’s husband

43 years old Mai Khatoon recalls how 3 years ago, her life took a drastic turn when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Initially, doctors couldn’t identify her disease and provided her regular treatment. When her condition didn’t improve after 6 months, she underwent some tests at a local hospital in Sindh where she was informed about cancer.

Mai Khatoon underwent 6 cycles of chemotherapy over a period of few months but unfortunately, it couldn’t improve her condition. Doctors gave up on her and recommended them to visit a specialized hospital for urgent surgical treatment. Mai Khatoon and her husband consulted many hospitals in Sindh but they all demanded a large amount of money for the complete course of treatment which is beyond her family’s reach. Her husband works as a labourer and hardly earns around 12,000 PKR a month. She has 4 kids and they all live in a small house in the village of Gharki, Sindh.

Mai Khatoon is fighting her breast cancer and has not lived a single day without pain for the last 3 years. When she had given up on life, her husband came across Transparent Hands through a doctor. Transparent Hands has taken up her case and she is now registered with this organization for her Breast Cancer Surgery (Mastectomy) in a few days at Akram Medical Complex.
