Basheer Ahmad's Story

Basheer Ahmad, 69 years old, has been diagnosed with a cataract in his left eye, which has caused the lens of the eye to get clouded. This impacts his vision to such an extent that he can barely see out of this eye. To restore vision, cataract surgery is required in which the left lens will be replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

Even in his old age, Basheer was working as a daily wage laborer, earning 500 PKR/month, but due to the loss of vision, he has been unable to work in the last few months. His wife, who is almost 64, works as a house-maid in different houses and makes around 6000 PKR/month. Ever since Basheer lost his job, hers is the only wage this old couple is currently relying on for their expenses. Even though they have 3 sons, none of them are in the financial position to support their father because their jobs do not pay enough.

“My children have trouble feeding their own families. We (my wife and I) swore that till our death, we will carry our own weight, earn for ourselves and feed ourselves on our own. I didn’t factor in the fact that I am getting old and less and less able to work now. But no matter. This will be resolved too, by the grace of God. Once I have my sight back, I will get right back up and start work again.” – Basheer

Basheer’s dire situation has not dampened his spirits. He remains chipper and hopeful that help will find him soon.

Basheer Ahmad's Story

Basheer Ahmad, 69 years old, was suffering from painless loss of vision and was diagnosed with a cataract in his left eye. He was advised phacoemulsification with IOL for his left eye. His surgery was performed by Dr Hassan Raza, at Bakhtawar Amin Hospital, on 23-07-20. He was discharged in a stable condition after one day of hospital stay.
