Laiba Zafar's Story

Laiba Zafar, 8 years old, started suffering from adverse symptoms at the age of 4 that prompted her parents to seek medical consultation. Her doctor suspected a cardiac issue and recommended her parents to arrange for angiography for a proper diagnosis. Since it is an expensive procedure and her parents are not well-off, it was very difficult for them to make the necessary arrangements but they got it done. The results of the angiography revealed that Laiba has a large congenital atrial septal defect (ASD) – a hole in the wall that separates the top two chambers of the heart. This hole causes oxygen-rich blood to mix with oxygen-poor blood, decreasing the overall efficiency of the circulation.

The next step in Laiba’s treatment plan is cardiac surgery for the closure of this ASD but hospitals with available beds are demanding a huge cost for this surgery. Her father, a laborer, barely earns 500 PKR/day on the days that he manages to find work. He not only has to worry about feeding his wife and 4 children but also rent, since he does not own a place of his own.

“I have a very limited income. When I pay rent, I have barely enough left for two meals a day. If I don’t pay rent, my family will be without a roof over their head. This is my everyday basic struggle. My eldest daughter is suffering from a heart condition and I had to borrow money just for a simple test. I cannot even imagine handling the cost of her surgery.” – Laiba’s father

Laiba and her family don’t have to be without hope when we can all pitch in for her surgery.
