Muhammad Bilal Khan's Story

“We first saw the worrisome signs when he wouldn’t even flinch at the loud banging on the roadside. We would keep calling his name and he wouldn’t turn his head towards us. As a mother, I knew then that my child was unable to hear.” – Bilal’s mother

6-year-old Muhammad Bilal started undergoing hearing loss at the age of 1. Before this, he was a responsive baby but gradually, his parents noticed that he wouldn’t react to sounds. When they took him for a check-up, the doctor informed them that Bilal was suffering from sensorineural hearing loss and had lost his hearing ability. The only way for this little boy to gain his hearing ability back is if a cochlear implant is surgically placed in his ear.

A cochlear implant is an expensive procedure that Bilal’s father cannot afford. Bilal’s father runs a kiryana shop in the village. With only a monthly wage of 15,000 PKR, it is impossible for him to even manage the day-to-day expenses of his wife and four children and three aunts.

Muhammad Bilal Khan's Story

Six-year-old Bilal, a resident of Mardan, has had sensorineural hearing loss since birth. Upon consultation at a local hospital, the doctor advised cochlear implant surgery as the only choice to enable him to hear. He was admitted to the University of Lahore, Teaching Hospital, where Dr. Naveed Aslam performed his operation on 5-01-2023. The doctor fixed the internal component of the cochlear implant, and the operation was successful. He was discharged after one day in the hospital. However, the journey to full restoration of his hearing was not yet complete. After a few weeks, he revisited the hospital, and the doctor fixed the external component of the cochlear implant, paving the way for a world of sound for him. Yet the journey to full restoration of his hearing doesn't end there. The doctor advised him to visit dedicated speech therapists to guide him on the path of language and communication development. Through their expertise and commitment, Bilal will learn to recognize and understand the beauty and complexities of speech, unlocking endless possibilities for his future. With the cochlear implant serving as a bridge to the world of sound, Bilal's newfound ability to hear opens doors to education, social interaction, and a fulfilling life. With the implant, he can actively engage in conversations, feeling included and connected at social gatherings. He can build meaningful relationships and experience the joy of laughter and shared moments with family, friends, and peers. He can now understand the nuances of tone and inflection, giving him a better understanding of feelings and intentions.
