Muhammad Uzair's Story

Whenever we hear the term tonsillitis, our mind jumps to the very definition of the thing which describes this condition as an inflammation of the tonsils. However, what we don’t realize is that this condition can lead to serious problems such as frequent high fevers and swallowing difficulties. This is exactly what Muhammad Uzair of district Mardan is suffering from. The 20-year-old boy has been suffering from tonsillitis for the last one and a half years. Uzair has tried everything in his capacity to minimize the inflammation. From popping up pills to getting injections for tonsils, he has tried everything. Except for one thing that he has been recommended by the doctors recently as well. A tonsillectomy.

A tonsillectomy involves surgical removal of tonsils, a last but effective resort for those who have had enough of tonsillitis. It is a popular treatment as far as chronic tonsillitis is considered. However, the surgical procedure is a costly one, a treatment that members of the underprivileged section of the community can hardly afford. Unfortunately, Muhammad Uzair belongs to the same tribe of people as well. He is bitter, but he is realistic. He says:

“My father is a retired army personnel. His pension figure hovers around 10,000 PKR per month while I work for 100 PKR per day at a photocopy shop. There are six of us who live in a 3-Marla house. I am sure that the not-so-pretty picture tells you clearly that I or my family cannot afford a tonsillectomy for me without any help from someone else”
