Noreen Fatima's Story

13-year-old Noreen Fatima started experiencing acute ear pain around 3 weeks ago for which she was immediately taken to a local hospital. She was recommended antibiotic injections but even after completing a course, she did not get better; her pain resurfaced a few days later. Noreen’s parents consulted a different doctor who recommended painkillers, which only dealt with the symptoms and not the underlying problem. Finally, a third doctor informed her parents that Noreen is suffering from chronic mastoiditis, an infection of the bone just behind the ear. The best course of action for her is a mastoidectomy, which is a type of surgery.

Noreen’s parents cannot cover the expenses of this operation. Her father works very occasionally and manages to earn just a little above 10,000 PKR per month. Mostly, the five members of this family that are currently living together rely on meager earnings from selling small amounts of milk.

“Literally the only resource we have, as a family, is a buffalo that we raised ourselves. I know it could be sold for a few thousand rupees but we would be out of the small income we get by selling its milk. We would go hungry because we rely on that income to buy our meals.” – Noreen’s mother
