Sabir Ali's Story

Sabir Ali, 33 years old, has been suffering from acute pain in his right inguinal region for the past 3 weeks. When he went to a local hospital for a consultation, he was told that he has a right inguinal hernia that requires prompt hernioplasty surgery. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, there weren’t any appointments available at this hospital so, despite the recommendation of surgery, Sabir was sent home with just a prescription of painkillers. In the past two weeks, he has been trying hard to find a hospital that would help him.

Sabir used to hold a private job at a factory that paid 25,000 PKR/month. Unfortunately, this factory had to shut down because of the losses suffered during the recent lockdown, and Sabir had to be let go. Currently, he does not hold a job. He, his wife, and two children, who all live in a joint family system with his elder brother, are currently dependent on the earnings of Sabir’s brother.

“Bhai (my brother) barely makes 20,000 rupees a month if he gets enough customers at his store. If he doesn’t, the earnings could be even less. 9 people in the house, including me, are dependent on him ever since I lost my job. I cannot burden my already overburdened brother with the responsibility of my surgery. And after him, I have no one else to turn to because he and I are the only ones in the house that work.” – Sabir

Sabir Ali's Story

Sabir Ali, 33 years old, was suffering from painful inguinal hernia on the right side from the last twenty days. He was advised a hernioplasty - a type of hernia repair surgery where a mesh patch is sewn over the weakened region of tissue. His surgery was done on 03-09-2020 by Dr. Ahmad Fawad at Lahore Care Hospital. After the operation his pain started to settle and recovered well. He remained admitted in hospital for three days and was discharged in a stable condition, returning back to his everyday life.
