Saira Bibi's Story

Saira Bibi, aged 21 years, a resident of North Karachi, suffered from pain and discharge in both of her ears. On medical check-up from a local clinic, the doctor prescribed her painkillers and antibiotics. This did not solve the problem in the long run. Therefore, when the pain episodes became recurrent and unbearable, she had to be taken to a hospital again. On detailed evaluation, she was diagnosed with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) and was advised a tympanomastoidectomy surgery for her left ear. In this surgery, the surgeon removes the infected tissue from the ear.

Saira cannot afford her surgery. She is a housewife and her father works as a labourer. His salary is only PKR 12000 per month. In this meager amount, he is hardly able to arrange two meals a day for the seven family members who are dependent on him. In these circumstances, accumulating enough money to pay for a major surgery seems next to impossible.

Saira expressed her grief in the following words:

“My ears have been hurting for years. The suffering seems unending. It is a test since I cannot pay for my surgery. I pray to God to create ease for me in my difficult time.”

Saira Bibi's Story

Twenty-one years old Saira Bibi, living in Karachi, had been suffering from pain in her both ears for the last 12 years. Upon consultation, she was assessed by an ENT specialist and was diagnosed with Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM). Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) is defined as a perforated tympanic membrane with persistent drainage from the middle ear for more than 2-6 weeks. She was advised to undergo a Left Tympanomastoidectomy. A Tympanomastoidectomy is surgery to treat frequent ear infections that have damaged the eardrum and tissue in and near the ear. The doctor removes the infected tissue in the bony area behind the ear, called the mastoid. For this procedure, she was admitted to Patel Hospital on 02-09-2021. Her surgery was carried out by Dr. Talha Ahmed on 03-09-2021. The procedure was successful and Saira Bibi was discharged the following day in satisfactory condition. She is now cured and living better
