Saman Shamim's Story

Saman Shamim, aged 19 years, is a young studious girl. She wants to become a doctor when she grows up.  Her motivation for medicine does not only stem from her love for science but also because she has suffered from a congenital eye condition that still remains uncured. She has suffered from ptosis since her birth. It is a condition in which the eyelid droops. The condition has affected Saman’s vision as well. The doctors told her family that she needed a sling with dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery. This surgery is performed to lift up the dropped eyelid and facilitate tear drainage of the eye. The doctors recommended the best time for her surgery would be after she turns 18 years old. So according to the doctor’s advice, after Saman turned 18, her parents took her to multiple local doctors. However, she was unable to get an appointment as the hospitals are overburdened in terms of hosting patients because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Saman’s father works as a salesman at a clothing store. His monthly income is only PKR 18,000. In this budget, he is barely able to manage food and other essentials for the five family members that he is supporting. Therefore, managing the expenses of a major eye surgery seemed next to impossible. Saman’s doctor told them to reach out to the Transparent Hands team. His father talked to our patient coordinator and got Saman registered immediately. This is what Saman had to say:

“Since I could not afford my eye surgery, I always wanted to become a doctor and treat patients for free, just like the kind people at Transparent Hands have decided to conduct my surgery free of cost. I hope I can help someone like this when I grow older.”

Saman’s eye surgery would only be possible if you decide to donate for her. We request you to support her and make a generous donation for her treatment.
