Shakeela Bibi's Story

Shakeela Bibi, aged 53 years, had suffered from hypertension for over five years. She also experienced shortness of breath and lack of energy on little exertion. When she visited a local doctor to get herself examined, she was advised to undergo an ECHO test and an angiography. The reports of these tests revealed that she had rheumatic heart disease. She also suffered from mitral and aortic stenosis. In rheumatic heart disease, rheumatic fever causes permanent damage to the heart valves. Consequently, the doctor advised a double valve replacement through open heart surgery for her. However, heart surgery costs a fortune.

Shakeela’s financial circumstances do not allow her to spend a hefty amount on her healthcare. She is a mother to three boys, two of whom work in private companies. Collectively, their monthly income is PKR 30,000. In this day and age, this amount is not sufficient to cover all the household expenses. An expensive surgery is completely out of the question.

Shakeela Bibi, aged 53 years, a resident of Lahore was living a happy life 5 years back till one day she felt pain in her chest. She went to the hospital for her check-up and the doctors advised her ECG. After getting the results, she was diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease and aortic stenosis/mitral stenosis. The doctors advised her for the surgery called double valve replacement (open heart surgery). For this purpose, she was admitted to National Hospital where her double valve placement was done by Dr. Ahmed Shehbaz on 16-08-21. She was discharged in a satisfactory condition, after 4 days of hospital stay.
