Shamim Mai's Story

Shamim Mai, 56 years of age, has recently been undergoing a steady loss of vision in her left eye. She has been diagnosed with a cataract in this eye. Due to this condition, the lens of the eye gets clouded, diminishing the vision. She requires cataract surgery in which the lens of her eye will be replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to restore her vision.

Shamim Mai lives with her husband and 12-year-old son in a small rented house. She has three daughters all of whom are married and live with their in-laws. Her husband works as a tailor at a small shop, earning 600-1000 PKR/day. Out of his monthly collective income, around 4000 PKR are spent just on rent. Since money is really tight in her household and she cannot accommodate the cost of her cataract surgery, Shamim Mai has delayed it for over a year and has only just approached Transparent Hands for help, after learning about the organization from a news channel transmission.

I nearly had several serious accidents because of it so I really hope that my vision can finally come back and I can feel what it was like to be able to see clearly out of both eyes. Shamim Mai's Story

Shamim Mai, 56 years old, was suffering from painless loss of vision and was diagnosed with a left eye cataract. She was advised phacoemulsification with IOL for her left eye. Her surgery was performed by Dr. Hassan Raza, at Bakhtawar Amin Hospital, on 21-07-20. She was discharged in a stable condition after one day of hospital stay.
