Shehla Nargis's Story

Shehla Nargis is a 38-year-old female, who suffers from a condition called a para-umbilical hernia. Mother of four, Shehla was diagnosed with hernia almost two years ago. The abdominal pain that she suffered from was managed by medication. But then, the medicines started losing their effect. And that is when Shehla made another visit to her doctor, who recommended getting a mesh-repair soon.

But wait. That is not the complete picture. There are plenty of things that need to be discussed briefly. First, what exactly is a para-umbilical hernia? A paraumbilical hernia is a hole in the layers of the abdominal wall in the midline with a close approximation to the umbilicus. If the hole is large enough there can be protrusion of the abdominal contents. Now, as for the mesh repairs, well, in this surgical procedure, a tissue scaffold is placed which blocks the protrusion. But the procedure is a costly one, especially for the likes of Shehla Nargis. Shehla’s husband is a daily wager. The maximum that he brings home on a good day is 500 PKR. While the family does own a 4-marla house, it is not roomy enough for a six-membered family. The overall picture is quite a gloomy one, something that Shehla agrees with as well:

“We make ends meet with great difficulty, but we don’t complain as a family. But I am not sure if we have enough in our resource pool to pay for my mesh repair. This is why I have been reaching out to organizations like Transparent Hands for any assistance that they can offer”
