Sub Dabizan's Story

“I haven’t been able to walk without feeling pain in my lower back and legs for as long as I can remember. At this point, medicines don’t even help. The surgery I got years ago has made my condition worse, but I didn’t realize to what extent until a doctor told me that the only way for me to walk properly again is with a decompression and fixation surgery.” – Sub Dabizan

Sub Dabizan, 67 years of age, had been suffering from intense pain in her backbone and legs about 4 years ago. Making her condition worse, suddenly her entire body had swollen up and she wasn’t able to move. Her husband took her to the hospital, where the doctors conducted a laminectomy and discectomy on her in 2014 at a private hospital.

After getting the surgery her condition did not improve and she did not gain relief from the pain even with help from medicines. The second she would stop taking her medicines her entire body would swell. The two steps she took were with help from a walker. When she sought medical advice again, she was informed that she had multiple levels of stenosis and required a decompression and fixation surgery again.

She lives in a 5 marla house with her husband who takes care of her. Her husband who is aged himself, is her caretaker and is very concerned about her health. They have 7 children who are busy in their own lives and provide for their own families. They don’t have the time or the means to help their own parents.

The recommended operation is proving too costly for Sub Dabizan and her family. Her husband relies on daily wages and hardly earns PKR 5000 a month. If he buys medicines for his wife, he left with no money to feed her.

Sub Dabizan and her husband visited a medical camp organized by Transparent Hands in Mardan where they put in a request to help with Sub Dabizan’s surgery.

Sub Dabizan's Story

Sub Dabizan, 67 years old, had weakness in her legs along with difficulty in walking. She was diagnosed with spinal stenosis after her tests and was advised surgery for decompression. For this purpose, she was admitted in Lahore Care hospital and the procedure was performed by Dr. Abrar Ullah on 17.10.2020. Her Laminectomy, discectomy and fixation was done for it. Sub Dabizan stayed in the hospital for four days and was discharged in a stable condition. She is slowly recovering from her surgery.
