Kousar Bibi's Story

Kousar Bibi, a 45-year-old woman from Sheikhupura, is experiencing significant challenges while standing and walking independently. Kousar had cancer, which badly affected her right leg. When she went to a doctor, he decided to amputate her right leg above the knee. This news was shocking for her, knowing she wouldn’t be able to perform her tasks as she used to do before. Her cancer treatment is complete now. Therefore, her doctor recommended an above-knee prosthesis to restore her mobility. However, the cost of this prosthesis is beyond her family’s financial capacity.

Without an above-knee prosthesis, her struggles will only intensify. She will remain dependent on others for basic tasks. The lack of mobility may lead to muscle weakness, joint stiffness, contracture, and other health complications.

Kousar lives in a modest home with her husband and seven children. Her husband, the sole breadwinner in the family, has a small shop where he sells sweets and brings in PKR 30,000 per month. A significant portion of his income goes towards their utility bills of PKR 1200, educational expenses of PKR 10,000, as well as their household expenses. After covering these essentials, nothing is left to save for any medical procedure. Kousar desperately needs this prosthesis, but the significant cost is overwhelming for her family.
