Ayesha Fatima aged 5, hails from Kasur and is suffering from Hirschsprung’s Disease. Hirschsprung’s disease is a condition affecting the large intestine (colon) where intestinal nerve cells (ganglion cells) fail to develop properly. It causes intestinal obstruction causing constipation and creating problems with passing stool. The condition is present at birth (congenital) as a result of missing nerve cells in the muscles of the infant’s colon. The suggested treatment is usually a pull-through procedure in which the diseased section of the intestine is removed and the healthy portion of the organ is pulled down to the anus. Ayesha Fatima has been advised Duhamel Pull Through procedure which her parents can not afford. Her father shares Ayesha’s journey accompanied with her ailment in the following words:

“At birth our daughter was diagnosed with this disease. She was just three days old when she was operated on. Doctors advised another surgery after six months. When time came, we took her to the hospital, all tests were made and samples were taken. The doctors were ready for surgery but our poverty did not allow us to. My daughter is now five years old and I still can not afford the procedure. I am a carpenter who earns around PRK. 25,000 a month. I support a family of nine members. I want to see my daughter healthy and happy like her other five siblings.”
