Amma Hooran's Story

Amma Hooran is a five-year-old resident of Nawab Shah, who has congenital sensorineural hearing loss. Her parents noticed that something was wrong when she was a one-year-old girl as she did not respond to their voices. Her parents took her to the local hospital for some tests.

Upon consultation, she was diagnosed with sensorineural deafness. The doctor advised her to undergo cochlear implant surgery. To restore hearing, a cochlear implant uses electrical stimulation of the cochlear nerve. There are external and internal components to the implant. The external part is attached behind the ear. It processes the sounds with a microphone before sending them to the implant inside the body.

Amma Hooran lives with her parents in a modest rented house with just one room in a village near Nawab Shah. She is the only child of her parents. Her father is a daily wager and the only breadwinner in the family. He earns just PKR 30,000 per month. The family’s resources are scarce after they pay PKR 3,000 in utility bills and PKR 8,000 in rent. Unfortunately, they cannot afford the costly surgery, so Amma’s father needs our support.

“My heart is heavy with fear, knowing that my child may miss out on key opportunities in life due to my inability to gather enough funds for her cochlear implant surgery. I humbly want you to kindly contribute now so that my beloved girl can get the required surgery and grow up to be a normal and happy girl.”

Upon learning about Transparent Hands and the causes we champion, someone informed Amma’s parents, who reached out to us in search of financial assistance and we registered her case. With a small donation from you, Amma can embrace the ability to hear and live to the fullest.

Amma Hooran's Story

Amma Hooran, a 5-year-old girl from Shaheed Benazirabad, Sindh, had been suffering from the inability to hear the sounds around her since birth. Her parents noticed her hearing impairment when she was one year old. They took her to a local hospital and received a consultation from a doctor. After conducting some medical tests, the doctor diagnosed Amma Hooran with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Amma Hooran couldn’t experience childhood fully and faced challenges. She used to look astonishingly when her parents and siblings wanted to convey any message as understanding and recognizing sounds was beyond her abilities. The doctor advised cochlear implant surgery to open the door to the world of sounds for her. However, the cost of this expensive surgery was beyond her family’s financial reach. Living in a small rented house, Amma Hooran’s parents barely made ends meet. Her father is the sole provider for the family and his monthly income of PKR 30,000 is not enough to cover the house rent in addition to the utility bills and groceries. Affording the much-needed surgery for Amma Hooran was impossible for them. A glimmer of hope arose when a neighbor told them about Transparent Hands. Amma Hooran’s family reached out to us and asked us for help. On 27th July 2024, Amma Hooran was admitted to GIMS Hospital in Gambat. On 28th July 2024, her surgery was performed by Dr. Maqbool Ahmed. He carefully inserted the internal component of the cochlear implant. Amma Hooran recovered and after receiving post-operative care, she was discharged on 29th July 2024. Six weeks after the surgery, the external component of the cochlear implant was installed. Now, Amma Hooran receives speech therapy sessions as it will help her to understand and process sounds effectively. Moreover, it will promote the development of clear speech, enabling better communication with others. Her parents described their happiness as follows: “We feel blessed to have received such amazing support during this time. Now Amma Hooran can listen, and her spirit is high. You have given her the greatest gift. She has now come out from her silent world. Thank you for being there for our daughter!” The cochlear implant surgery has allowed Amma Hooran to enter a new world where she can now easily understand people. She can communicate her basic needs and her future is filled with endless possibilities. Amma Hooran’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to you for giving her a world filled with sounds. Your contributions transformed her life.
