When Farzana turned one, they went to the doctors to find out what was wrong. That’s when they learned she has a condition called profound sensorineural hearing loss, which means she can’t hear sounds at all. But there’s hope for Farzana—a transformative surgery called a cochlear implant.

This extraordinary surgical intervention has two parts: an internal component surgically placed near her ear and an external piece that will be fitted in the weeks following the surgery.
