Sumiya Umar's Story

8 years old Sumiya Umar has been complaining about not being able to see the blackboard in class. This has been going on for three months now. At first, her parents did not pay much attention to it. However, gradually her diminished vision became evident through her runny eyes. Afterwards, All the home remedies failed, and nothing was able to help Sumiya Umar see better.  As her condition worsened, Sumiya’s parents took her to the hospital. 

After a thorough check-up, the doctor diagnosed Sumiya with bilateral developmental Cataract. A Cataract is an opacification of the lens of the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Usually, this condition is found in people who have grown weary with age. Sumiya Umar is a rather unfortunate 8 years old to go through that. In order to help Sumiya Umar see better, the doctor has advised her to undergo a Phaco IOL surgery on the right eye as soon as possible. Phacoemulsification, or phaco, is a method of cataract surgery in which the defected lens is replaced with an artificial lens.

“My daughter had big dreams about her future. She wanted to be an astronaut and go into space. Science was her favourite subject. Now, with her fading vision, her future dreams seem to have faded too. In three months, she has grown weary and hopeless.” -Sumiya Umar’s mother
