Fifty-three years old Zahida Bibi suffers from diabetes. People living with diabetes have an increased risk of lower limb infections which leads to their amputation. Therefore, four years ago, Zahida was diagnosed with diabetic foot. A diabetic foot is an infectious condition of foot that occurs due to abnormally high sugar levels in the blood. At first, the doctor prescribed some medication, to which she willfully obliged. However, over time her condition worsened, and her leg had to be amputated at the above-knee level. 

After the wound healed, Zahida Bibi circled here and there in search of a prosthetic leg. But due to COVID 19 pandemic, all of the public healthcare’s focus is on the affected patients. Therefore, patients like Zahida Bibi suffer a lot. She went to a private hospital where the cost of the prosthetic leg was beyond her affordability. Zahida Bibi’s husband is the sole earner of the family. He works as a daily wage worker. He works with a construction company and hardly earns PKR 15000 per month. His income barely covers the household expenses. Therefore, he is in no position to arrange for Zahida Bibi’s surgery. He told us:

“For the last four years, my wife has been hovering on crutches. It seems like a lifetime. I feel so helpless seeing her like that. I wish I had the resources to help her. But this is life. We cannot do much about it.”
