Let’s Cure Memoona Abbas’s Spinal Condition

Memoona Abbas's Story
Meet Memoona Abbas, a 57-year-old woman from Sujawal, Sindh, who has been suffering from back pain for the last six years. Simple activities like walking, standing, and even basic movements like getting in and out of bed have become a daily challenge for her. She also faces difficulty while bathing, dressing, and maintaining personal hygiene due to pain and weakness. Memoona decided to consult a doctor at a local hospital, who performed a thorough examination and diagnosed her with Prolapsed Intervertebral Disc (PID) – C6-C7+ Compression of L5-S1. It indicates a condition involving a herniated disc causing compression at the C6-C7 level in the neck and also at the L5-S1 level in the lower back. For a long time, Memoona received symptomatic treatment, but she couldn’t find long-term relief.
To relieve her pain, her doctor has recommended anterior cervical fixation and posterior decompression. However, the surgical cost is overwhelming for her family.
If Memoona does not undergo anterior cervical fixation and posterior decompression, she may develop progressive cervical and lumbar radiculopathy or myelopathy. This may lead to irreversible spinal cord or nerve root damage, resulting in worsening motor deficits, sensory loss, and paralysis.
Memoona is a dedicated housewife, spending most of her time managing her household and taking care of her children. Memoona’s husband is unwell and unable to provide for his family. They have four kids, out of whom one works as a shopkeeper and brings in just PKR 35,000 per month. With such a limited income, managing utility bills amounting to PKR 6000 as well as food, and living expenses of six family members is a great challenge. There is no way they can afford the surgery on their own. In their desperate need for help, Memoona’s family has reached out to Transparent Hands, asking for assistance.
Memoona said with teary eyes:
“For a long time, I have been bearing this pain, and I just want to get rid of it now. It is now affecting almost every task that I do. My husband is unemployed, and my son works hard to make ends meet, but his income is just insufficient to cover the cost of my surgery. I request you to help me undergo the surgery so I can have a pain-free life.”
