Riaz ul Haq, aged 19 years, a resident of Karachi was suffering from pain and discharge from the ear for the past 8 months. He went to a local hospital and the doctor prescribed him some medication but it did not cure this disease. His pain increased day by day. Later he went to a hospital and after thorough checkup, the doctor diagnosed him with CSOM. Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is defined as a perforated tympanic membrane with persistent drainage from the middle ear for more than 2-6 weeks. After the diagnosis, the doctor advised him to undergo a left tympanoplasty.
It is an expensive procedure. Riaz ul Haq is a student of a madrassa. He studies and lives in the madrassa. He gets PKR. 6000 per month as a stipend from his madrassa. He cannot afford this surgery. He told us:
“When the pain started, I did not have the slightest idea that I would end up having surgery. Being a madrassa student, It is very difficult for me to cover my expenses with the stipend. Even if I save money for the whole year, I cannot save enough money for the surgery.”

Riaz ul Haq's Story
Nineteen years old Riaz, living in Karachi, had been suffering from ear discharge. Gradually his hearing ability was also deteriorating. He went to an ENT specialist, where he was diagnosed with Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media of the left ear. After the diagnosis, he was advised to undergo a Tympanoplasty. Therefore, he was admitted to Patel Hospital on 2-11-21. His procedure was performed by Dr. Talha Qureshi on 3-11-21 and was discharged after two days of hospital stay in a stable condition.
